How ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ Explained Aurelius Dumbledore’s Identity

the fantastic beasts the movies have been one unexpected twist after another. The first movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Themsupposed to be the start of a trilogy about a Hufflepuff magizoologist and his animal friends, but then ended with a Twist that revealed the real antagonist to be Grindelwald. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald introduced a young Dumbledore to end with a twist bringing in a young Dumbledore, Albus’ supposed long-lost brother. Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets finally cleared up Aurelius Dumbledore’s identity, though it suggested he wasn’t long for the franchise.

Warning: Spoilers for Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets to follow. the fantastic beasts the films have seen their share of controversy. From the behind-the-scenes drama about cast members Johnny Depp and Ezra Miller to the controversial opinions of JK Rowling, the film has been pushed back to revamp. In the meantime, many fans have left the franchise.

If those controversies were limited to off-screen issues and the movies were spectacular, that would be one thing. (There are many beloved problem writers in the world.) But the fantastic beasts the films have also been controversial on screen. Minerva McGonagall is in the movies, although (according to wizarding world lore) she hasn’t been born yet. The films are titled “Fantastic Beasts” but focus on Dumbledore and Grindelwald, not Newt and his animals. Most important of all was the introduction of Aurelius Dumbledore, who fans didn’t like and whose story didn’t match up with everything fans knew about the Dumbledore family.

In the film, Ezra Miller, who plays Aurelius Dumbledore, insisted his character’s identity was legit. But Fantastic Beasts 3 finally explains that although he is a Dumbledore, he is not the brother of Aberforth and Albus, as claimed in the second film. He is Abelforth’s son, born out of wedlock, and Albus’ nephew.

Some fans had speculated that this might be the case or that he was Albus’ own son. Anyway, Aurelius being the much younger son of Percival Dumbledore (Albus’ father), it didn’t make sense in the timeline since he would have already been locked up in Azkaban.

But the real surprise is to know why the phoenix continues to hang around Aurèle in the films: he is seriously ill. Like Albus and Abelforth’s deceased sister, Ariana, Aurelius being an Obscurial has led to poor health, and he doesn’t have much longer to live. Although Albus’ main goal in following Grindelwald is to stop him from stealing the Wizarding World Elections, his other hope is to help Aberforth find his son and bring him home to live out his final days in peace.

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets is in theaters now.
